The Pacific Puddle Jump by Sail Tahiti
The winds and weather conditions that prevail every year in the eastern Pacific Ocean make March, April and May the ideal time for sailors to travel from the west coast of the Americas to the exotic archipelagos of French Polynesia. In 1997, the editors of Latitude 38 magazine coined the name Pacific Puddle Jump to describe this 3,000- to 4,000-mile ocean crossing, and began reporting on the fleet’s adventures at sea each year.
Until 2025, the Pacific Puddle Jump was owned by Andy Turpin, former editor of Latitude 38, and had established itself as one of the world’s leading offshore sailing rallies. As of 2026, the PPJ is organized by Sail Tahiti. Each year, from late February to early June, numerous boats and crews of various nationalities cast off individually from different ports on the West Coast of the United States.
Designed above all for the safety and solidarity of the fleet, the PPJ is based on minimal rules.

"We had good camaraderie and everyone had a great time. The experience turned out to be more about the people than about the sailing — perhaps it always is."

"Don't let anybody tell you not to go, or when to go, or how to go, or where to go . Do your own research, make the preparations you deem necessary, choose the destination and route that you want, and then go. Listen to advice, but don't let it dictate your choices."

"What a great experience. We learned a lot about our selves, each other, the boat and the ocean. "Some cool things: Sea creatures such as dolphins, whales, boobies, flying fish and turtles; phosphorescence; sailing for long periods without having to touch sails or steering; crossing the equator and swimming around the boat in the middle of the ocean; the camaraderie with fellow Puddle Jumpers."

"Don't let it scare you; it's downwind and so easy and steady. Squalls yes, but mostly relatively mellow ones, we sailed often with genoa only to make it easy on the autopilot and easy to take in sail for squalls at night . Yeah, you loose some speed but if there's enough wind it's okay, and you sleep better."

"Just go! But do stock upon tequila and tortilla chips before you leave Mexico."
