Tikehau Rides the Blue Economy Wave

Published : 4 November 2025

In an effort to stimulate the Tikehau’s economic growth, French Polynesia has initiated a series of development projects aimed at improving safety at sea and supporting the community of this Tuamotu atoll, much loved by sailors and tourists alike.

The Tuamotu atoll of Tikehau is steadily evolving to meet the needs of its community and the rapidly developing boating industry. Renowned for the diversity of its seabed fauna and its crystal-clear waters, the atoll is now at the heart of several marine restoration efforts spearheaded by the government of French Polynesia.

The navigational markers from the Tuherahera motu, where the village is located, to the Tuheiva pass to the west, are currently being upgraded to ensure safer passage for fishermen, the local community, and visiting sailors. Following a break of several months, work resumed in October 2025. It represents a total investment of 120 million F CFP, jointly funded by the Country and the State, applying the 3rd Financial Instrument.

Meanwhile, plans to modernize the landing stage and marina have been finalized. These projects aim to develop maritime services and improve facilities for boats, and they are expected to feature in French Polynesia’s 2026 budget. These developments will boost the local economy while ensuring safe maritime access to this atoll 300 kilometers (≈ 186 miles) from Tahiti.

Terminal expansion

And on the air travel front, there is more modernization to come. Tikehau terminal is set to undergo improvement. The expansion scheduled to begin in November 2025 will triple the terminal’s current size. The 26-month project is expected to enhance the comfort of air travelers and better accommodate growing air traffic. With new runway lighting in place, aircraft can now land safely at night or in adverse weather conditions.

Furthermore, urban development in the northwestern part of the village continues, with concrete work underway to stabilize access road roads and support the area’s growing population.

Tikehau remains a tranquil Tuamotu treasure, attracting tourists who come to dive with manta rays, explore coral gardens, and observe colonies of red-footed boobies. These new developments on Tikehau mark a significant step forward, striking a balance between progress and preservation, ensuring it remains a haven for residents and a paradise for sea lovers.
